The Humane League UK ("The Humane League UK", "we", or "us") is a registered charity in England and Wales (registered charity number 1177926).
This Privacy Statement explains how we collect and use personal information, including any personal information collected via this website, or when you interact with us in any other ways.
We take data protection very seriously and we are committed to protecting the privacy of the individuals whose personal information we hold. Our processing of any personal information is governed by UK information protection law. We do not actively offer or promote our services to European citizens

How we collect personal information

The types of personal information we collect
The personal information we routinely collect includes:
If you apply for a job, internship or to be a volunteer, we may ask you for additional information related to that specific purpose and we will notify you about this at the time. We do not normally ask for any ‘special category’ or other sensitive information (such as diversity or dietary information) except if you apply for a job or request to become a volunteer. Providing this type of information is optional.
How we use personal information
We may use personal information for the following purposes (the lawful basis for processing is in bold after each statement):
To fulfil a query or request for information you have sent us - For the performance of a contract or agreement
To administer relevant services. For example, if you sign a petition, register as a volunteer or member of our Fast Action Network, or request to attend one of our events - For the performance of a contract or agreement
To update you about any changes to services you have signed up for, including changes to terms and conditions - For the performance of a contract or agreement

Where the processing is required to meet our legal and statutory obligations. For example in relation to HMRC (taxes) - Legal obligation

You can consent or decline. If you consent you may withdraw that consent at any time, for example, by using an ‘Unsubscribe’ link on our emails.
About our Legitimate interests: We sometimes process personal information on the basis that it is necessary for the pursuit of our legitimate interests in the course of our animal welfare work (as shown above). When we process personal information under legitimate interests, it is ways which individuals might reasonably expect and which do not materially impact their rights, freedom or interests.
When information is necessary: Sometimes certain information is necessary to enable us to perform a specific contract or service for you, or to comply with our legal obligations. In these situations, if you choose not to provide the necessary information, we may not be able to provide the services you have requested.

We take the protection of your personal information very seriously. We take appropriate steps to ensure your personal information is kept safe and secure at all times.
We use specialist external service providers for certain purposes, who process personal information on our behalf under contract. For example, we use a customer relationship management (CRM) platform to collect and process personal information and to send bulk email communications. We use a specialist payment service provider to process donations on our behalf.
When we do so, we ensure appropriate agreements are in place to protect personal information. Any transfers between ourselves and external service providers are by secure means. For any service providers located outside the UK, we endeavour to make sure that, when required, additional safeguards are in place.
Sharing of personal information
We do not share your personal information with other organisations for them to use for their own purposes except, and only in specific necessary situations, with The Humane League (based in the USA). We would obtain your consent before transferring your data to any other organisation.
We may disclose personal information if required to do so by law, i.e. if we reasonably believe that this sharing is necessary to comply with the law and the reasonable requests of law enforcement.
How long we keep your personal information
We only keep personal information for as long as necessary for specified purposes. How long we retain this information varies depending on the purposes it is used for, taking into account any regulatory requirements that may apply.
Your personal information rights

Right of access: You have the right to access the personal information we hold about you and the purposes for which we are using it. We may ask for proof of your identity. On receipt of such a request we will endeavour to respond to you as soon as possible, at most within one calendar month.

Right of erasure: You have the right to request that we delete any personal information pertaining to you. We will assess any deletion request on a case-by-case basis and will endeavour to respond to you as soon as possible, within one calendar month.

If you wish to object to emails like this, you can simply click on the "unsubscribe" link in the emails we send you. You can also opt-out of any forms of direct marketing, such as postal or telephone marketing, by notifying us using the contact details shown above.
If you have any concerns about the manner in which we have collected or used your personal information, please contact us and we’ll do our very best to help. If you’re unhappy with the way we have handled your personal information, you have the right to contact your local Supervisor Authority for data protection. If you live in the UK, for example, that would be the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).
Children's privacy
The Humane League UK is committed to protecting the privacy of children. Our website and other services are not intended for use by children under the age of 16. No personal information should be submitted to our website, or communication entered into with us, by under 16s.
