CHICKENS RAISED FOR MEAT ARE BORN TO SUFFER.
Small chicks like Henry, just a day or two old, are dropped onto a filthy barn floor among thousands of others. The noise is overwhelming for this young chick.
And, with the help of our supporters, we're campaigning relentlessly to make sure they get better.
Find out more about chickens raised for meat, and their lives on factory farms.
Small chicks like Henry, just a day or two old, are dropped onto a filthy barn floor among thousands of others. The noise is overwhelming for this young chick.
Selectively bred, chickens grow much bigger and faster than they did in the 1950's. Henry's breast muscle is so grotesquely large that he cannot walk, his own legs don't support his weight. He is forced to lie in his own waste, which burns his skin.
Henry will be picked up by his fragile legs, thrown into a crate and transported a great distance to the slaughterhouse in fear and pain. Chickens like Henry who face this fate are still only a few weeks old. They should be still with their mothers.
The Better Chicken Commitment (BCC) is a set of criteria that improves the welfare of chickens raised for meat. A growing number of companies are signing up to the BCC, pledging to improve welfare for chickens. But we still have a long way to go.
