Hens in a cage-free environment

The Open Wing Alliance (OWA), a global coalition of 98 animal protection organisations founded by The Humane League, has today released a new report on cage-free progress.

With a growing movement towards buying free range eggs, you might be surprised at the numbers of hens still kept in cages in the UK and across the world. It’s a sad truth that so-called ‘enriched’ cages are still legal in this country and barren cages across the world.

Hens in cages suffer terribly. They have no more room than the size of an A4 sheet of paper to themselves, and often can’t enjoy their natural behaviours, leading to immense stress.

Almost 2,500 food corporations around the world have pledged to remove cages from their egg supply chains. But the pledge is just the start.

To really make an impact on the lives of the millions of hens kept for their eggs, these companies have to fulfil their commitment and transition to cage-free systems. The good news is the recent report released by the OWA reveals that 89% of companies with deadlines of 2022 or earlier are now fully cage-free.

These companies include restaurants, retailers, producers and caterers. The range of sectors covered demonstrates the changing tide against the cruel practice of caging hens.

Companies across the world are responding to consumer demand and establishing themselves as higher welfare brands by transitioning to cage-free eggs at rapid rates.

The OWA is a coalition of 98 animal protection organisations across 70 countries. This far reaching and impactful collaboration is leading to big change for hens with cage-free eggs now becoming commonplace in the global egg industry.

The fight isn’t over yet. The Humane League UK is still fighting to ban cages in the UK and we won’t rest until this archaic and cruel practice is gone for good.
