Earlier this month, members of the England Football team were targeted with scores of disgusting racist hate.

Now, F1 driver and vegan activist Lewis Hamilton has been subject to online abuse after his British Grand Prix Victory.

This is unacceptable.

We’ve added our name to an open letter condemning the lack of adequate action taken by Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat following this racist abuse.

Organised by the Conscious Advertising Network, the letter is a collective call from companies and charities alike for social media companies to act.

It calls for advertisers to:

  1. Publish updated hate speech policies, that include the use of emojis, to support their ‘zero tolerance’ approach.
  2. Advertise their zero tolerance approach directly to users.
  3. Enforce their policies and report racist abuse to the police, employers and relevant football clubs as a crime.
  4. Add an interstitial to disrupt potentially racist remarks, and ensure human checking on all posts flagged in this way.

We each have a role to play in taking action against racism. We know that as an organisation, we still have much more work to do to become more equitable and inclusive. You can read more about our efforts to do better.

And, we urge our followers and supporters to be part of the change and take action against online hate. You can find out how to do this here.
