The European Commission announces a huge step forward for animals with a ban on the use of cages from 2027.

It’s been years in the making. But this week the European Commission has announced it will introduce legislation to ban the use of cages in animal agriculture by 2027.

Earlier this month, the European Parliament voted overwhelmingly to phase out cages across the EU, urging the European Commission to adopt the resolution.

This week we heard the news that the European Commission has adopted this clear ban on cages and it will soon become EU law.

The legislation will mean that, by 2027, all farmed animals, from egg-laying hens and geese, to ducks and rabbits, should be out of cages. It’s a monumental step forward for millions of animals. Cages cause some of the worst forms of suffering on factory farms, leading to intense stress and illness.

The win has come after years of campaigning led by Compassion in World Farming. Campaigners across Europe have taken part in this fight, including 1.4 million animal lovers who added their signatures for a European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI).

We cannot stress enough how important it is that we all join together to fight for animals suffering on factory farms, and the difference it can make. This change has only happened because of the coalition of charities, scientists, politicians, businesses, citizens and more who have fought so hard, as well as all of our supporters who took action in support of the campaign.

Sadly, as the UK has left the EU, this life-changing law won’t apply here.

This means that the millions of hens still kept in cages in the UK don’t have the same hope of a better future. It’s crucial that we keep fighting for them.
