Open letter signed by 23 animal protection groups urges consumer action.

A school of fish swimming in the ocean.

There are huge welfare and environmental concerns resulting from the intensive fish farming and fishing industries.

It’s vital that we continue to pressure these industries to improve their policies, and advocate for change at a legislative level.

The good news is, we all have the power to help fishes, every single day.

One of the most effective and easiest things you can do is to reduce - or even better, end - your consumption of aquatic animals, including fishes, crustaceans and molluscs.

That’s why we’ve signed an open letter today urging consumers like you and I to take action on our plates. The letter is coordinated by the Aquatic Animal Alliance, of which The Humane League UK is a proud member, and is signed by 23 animal protection groups.

The letter calls for consumers to help fishes around the world by:

  • Seeing aquatic animals as individuals rather than stocks. That’s why at The Humane League UK, we call them ‘fishes’ rather than fish!
  • If you are in a position to do so, replace your consumption of fish and seafood products with nutritious plant-based foods. See our plant-based seafood recommendations here.
  • If you are not in a position to stop eating aquatic animals altogether, reduce your consumption as much as possible.
  • Share this on your social networks to help increase public awareness.

With our supporters by our side, we’ll be continuing the fight for fishes. We want to see the UK Government change the law so that fishes are protected from the worst kinds of suffering at the time of slaughter.
