Lidl Germany has committed to ending the use of cruelly-bred Frankenchickens.

Frankenchickens’ intensive selective breeding means they grow too big, too fast, causing health and welfare issues that lead these animals to suffer. It’s the biggest animal welfare crisis in the UK right now, with 90% of the 1.1 billion chickens slaughtered for meat each year in the UK made up of fast-growing Frankenchickens. But, sadly, the abuse isn’t limited to the UK.

Around the world, billions of these fast-growing breeds of chicken are used to maximise corporate profit.

But the tide against Frankenchickens is starting to turn in Germany.

Lidl Germany has committed to ending the use of cruelly-bred Frankenchickens, meaning chickens raised for their shelves will soon be spared from lives of intense suffering.

Alongside our supporters and our allies in the Open Wing Alliance, we’ve been campaigning for two years to persuade Lidl to stop selling Frankenchickens. Investigation after investigation uncovered horrific suffering on farms connected to Lidl in Europe. Now, with half of Germany's top retailers phasing out these fast-growing breeds, it's clear that change is possible, and it’s happening.

Our thanks go to our friends in the Open Wing Alliance including Albert Schweitzer Foundation in Germany who’ve worked tirelessly to make this happen.

But in the UK, Lidl GB has yet to take this crucial step. Why are millions of chickens in the UK still suffering, while positive change in the same company unfolds just across the water?

We’re not giving up. And we hope you join us to fight for animals and demand that Lidl GB joins its German counterpart in showing compassion for chickens. Each action, each voice, adds weight to this movement. Because chickens deserve better.
