Today, we’ve launched a new campaign calling on Lidl’s partners to speak out against animal cruelty. Here’s why.

Budget supermarket Lidl is no stranger to partnerships. As well as selling a myriad of blue and yellow branded merch, they currently partner with cycling gear merchant Trek Bikes and parenting event The Baby Show. But, while these lucrative partnerships aim to promote values of care, trust, innovation, and social responsibility, an animal welfare scandal is happening behind closed doors.
That’s because sadly, the chickens that end up on Lidl’s shelves don’t get to see the benefit of these values.
The majority of chickens raised for meat sold at Lidl GB are Frankenchickens, selectively bred to grow very large, very fast, in order to maximise profit for Lidl. These birds often endure misery.
In direct contrast to the cycling freedom that Trek promotes, the chickens’ accelerated growth can leave them suffering from painful lameness. They are often forced to lay in their own waste, which contains concentrated levels of ammonia. This chemical can leave painful burns on their skin.
They are then still just babies when they are slaughtered at just a few weeks old. Surely this isn’t something The Baby Show, an event aimed at helping new parents bring life into the world, wants to be connected to?

In recent years, Lidl has been embroiled in a major chicken cruelty scandal, with investigations repeatedly exposing unimaginable suffering in its supply chain.
The Humane League UK and its supporters have reached out to both Trek and The Baby Show about this important issue, but shockingly, despite both having a lucrative sponsorship deal with Lidl GB, both have remained silent.
It's time for The Baby Show and Trek to do the right thing and speak out against animal cruelty.
