A leap forward for hens as Morrisons no longer sells shell eggs from caged hens.

Major retailer Morrisons is now 100% free-range for shell eggs. This exciting news comes 5 years ahead of schedule and hints at big changes within the retail sector.

Back in 2016, The Humane League UK was new. But that didn’t stop us trying to change the welfare policies of some of the bigest companies. As part of our mission to get egg-laying hens out of cages, we worked with Morrisons until it committed to go cage-free by 2025.

An incredible 5 years early, Morrisons has been able to remove shell eggs from caged hens from its shelves, setting the bar high for other major supermarkets to reach. Not only is this move ethical, Morrisons is also focused on its customers, reducing the price of free-range eggs to make them more affordable.

Importantly, Morrisons is also working towards a 2025 deadline to remove all ingredients that contain eggs from caged hens from its stores. It is not always known that, while you may choose to buy free-range eggs, many cakes, biscuits and other processed foods can contain ingredients from hens that are kept in horrific conditions. But with Morrisons’ commitment to remove these products over the next 5 years, significant steps are being made towards better treatment of laying hens.

While getting corporations to commit to improving animal welfare is a huge achievement, this news demonstrates the importance of ensuring they are making the changes to fulfill these commitments.

At The Humane League UK, we focus not just on getting companies to commit to change, but also on reporting to show they’re on track for meeting the deadlines. We will not let them get away with broken promises to their customers.

Morrisons meeting its commitment early is fantastic news, demonstrating that these changes can be made relatively quickly and with minimal effect on customers. We hope that other supermarkets follow Morrisons’ lead.
