Today, Beatrice’s Bill was presented to the House Of Commons. Find out what happened next.
Today, a unique and momentous opportunity to ban cages for laying hens was presented to the House of Commons in the form of a Ten Minute Rule Bill.
Henry Smith MP delivered the bill today, called Beatrice’s Bill. The bill is named after a special hen rescued after two unimaginable years spent in a cage.
Beatrice was lucky. She is recovering thanks to care from our Animal Welfare Specialist, Mia. But egg-laying hens like Beatrice are kept in cages in their millions in the UK.
This bill was a chance to change their futures.
What happened?
The great news is that no one opposed the speech, so the Bill was introduced without a vote.
This is a fantastic step in the right direction, and means that the bill is now eligible for a second reading, the next step to becoming law. We’ll keep you updated on when this will be.
Now we need to keep the pressure on.
What’s next?
To get rid of cages for good, we need a change in the law.
We know it can be done.
After years of relentless work by activists and welfare organisations, so many companies have agreed to go cage-free and eliminate cages for hens from their supply chains.
More and more people in the UK are shunning eggs from caged hens in favour of free-range or plant-based.
If companies and the public want this change, why is the Government dragging their heels?
What can you do?
If you agree that no animal should be confined to a cage, sign our petition.
We want to put more pressure on the Government to change the law and ban cages for hens.
Once you’ve signed, why not share it on your social media or via email and help us spread the message.
Hens like Beatrice deserve better. Help Beatrice end cages for good.
