Owners of Heinz and Birds Eye commit to the European Chicken Commitment

Nomad Foods and Kraft Heinz have become the latest in a string of companies within the food sector committing to the European Chicken Commitment (ECC).

These commitments have a huge impact on the lives of chickens raised for meat. Bred to grow too large, too fast, in order to increase the profit on breast meat, these birds can suffer from crippling leg problems, as well as fatal conditions related to the strain put on their internal organs.

Chickens on factory farms are often unable to walk, and suffer from ammonia burns on their legs and bodies from lying in their own mess, which is not cleaned until the birds go to slaughter. They suffer mental distress from the lack of space, light and enrichment.

But we’re working relentlessly to change that.

The ECC raises the standard of welfare for these birds, including giving them more space, natural light and prohibiting fast-growing breeds.

Nomad Foods, who own Birds Eye, were satisfied with the minimum welfare standards for their chickens and initially refused to commit to the ECC.

Along with our partners in the Open Wing Alliance and, of course, with the help of our supporters across the world, we launched a campaign against Nomad Foods. It took just 24 hours to receive confirmation that Nomad Foods would commit to improved welfare.

Kraft Heinz, who own brands including Heinz and Weight Watchers from Heinz, committed just a couple of weeks later, following talks with our Corporate Relations team. The commitment will ensure the food manufacturer improves chicken welfare across its European supply chain.

  • Kraft Heinz joins the rapidly increasing list of companies signing up to the ECC...Following on from this commitment to higher welfare chicken, we encourage the rest of the manufacturing sector to swiftly follow suit and join the movement to improving the welfare of animals raised for food.

Just days after this commitment Kraft Heinz announced that it was investing in a vegan cheese company, a sure sign that this company recognises the changes happening within the food industry, and the opportunities involved.
