The Humane League UK began in 2016 and a lot has changed since then. From growing our network of volunteers and members across Europe, to challenging huge global companies, and winning, we’re pretty proud of what we’ve done. With 2019 being our most successful year yet, we’re looking back to see what we achieved.

Award-winning charity

We are very proud that The Humane League once again earned Top Charity status from Animal Charity Evaluators (ACE).

To win the award, we shown that we work in ways that are most likely to produce the greatest gains for animals.

Better welfare for chickens

Chickens raised for meat are some of the most abused animals in the world. Suffering in their millions, these animals are rasied in horrific conditions. Most of the one billion chickens raised and killed in the UK each year are bred to grow so big, so fast, they often become crippled under their own weight.

In 2019, we relentlessly pushed companies to improve the welfare of these chickens by committing to the Better Chicken Commitment (BCC).

The BCC is a set of criteria to improve the welfare of chickens raised for meat. Agreed by a group of leading animal welfare organisations, including The Humane League UK, it bans the use of breeds that grow too fast, and gives the chickens more space, improved air quality and light.

Freeing hens from cages

Despite the recent growth in free range egg sales in the UK, in 2018 it was reported that 44% of eggs sold in the UK were from hens kept in cages.

We at The Humane League UK believe that no animal should be kept in a cage. Austria and Switzerland have banned all cages, and Germany is on track to ban cages by 2025.

The Open Wing Alliance is a global coalition of animal protection organisations set up by The Humane League to campaign against cages. In 2019 it expanded to 81 groups in 64 countries.

By working with other animal welfare organisations to ban cages across Europe, we've been able to really step up our cage-free campaign. As a result, 23 companies committed to a cage-free policy including huge global hotel chains Radisson and Wyndham Hotels and Resorts.

A national network

A strong movement needs a strong voice. Our volunteer network across the UK enables our voice to be amplified and our message to reach far and wide.

We've also recruited and trained 8 Regional Reps to lead their communities in taking action against the abuse of animals raised for food.

These incredible people give their time, skills and knowledge to take part in protests, plan and run events, support our campaigns and inspire others with talks.

Our volunteers are a valued part of The Humane League UK team and we couldn't have achieved all that we did in 2019 without them.

In addition to our volunteers, we've built a huge network of online activists with our Fast Action Network. Thousands of supporters across the world are now taking online action for the animals.

With the strength of these people by our side, we know we can acheive even more for the animals in 2020.
