10 facts about chickens you may not know
Think chickens aren't intelligent? Here are 10 facts about chickens that may surprise you.

A broiler chicken is a chicken raised for meat. How much do you know about their lives before they're slaughtered?
FIND OUTChickens are incredible animals. Did you know that they use more than 24 different vocalisations to communicate with other chickens in their flock? This allows them to convey important information such as ‘there’s a predator nearby!’ or ‘thanks for the food!'.
Unfortunately, most chickens raised for meat in the UK today spend their lives in grim, crowded factory farms where they can't express their natural behaviours. They're bred to grow unnaturally fast, meaning many of them can't even support their own weight with their legs. As a result, they're forced to lie in their own waste - in pain and struggling to walk.
Hens raised to lay eggs in the UK also face suffering due to cruel practices. 14 million hens each year in the UK are confined to cages in which they don't have the space to express their natural behaviours and move around freely. Despite many countries moving to ban cages for hens, they remain legal in the UK today.
At The Humane League UK, we campaign to end the abuse of the 1+ billion chickens raised for meat and the 30+ million hens raised to lay eggs in the UK each year.
