Nando’s signs up to the Better Chicken Commitment why don't others such as Subway and McDonald’s to follow suit.

Just over a year after KFC committed to the Better Chicken Commitment (BCC), a second UK chicken giant has followed suit.

Nando’s has announced that it will meet the higher welfare chicken criteria of the BCC by 2026, in a move that will impact a huge number of chickens.

This momentous news from Nando’s follows dialogue with several animal protection organisations, including The Humane League UK, World Animal Protection and Compassion in World Farming.

  • We are thrilled that Nando's has committed to the Better Chicken Commitment, pushing forward progress for chicken welfare not just in its own supply chain but within the wider industry as well.

~ Vicky Bond, Managing Director at The Humane League UK

The BCC is a set of criteria laid out by a number of animal protection organisations, including The Humane League UK, to improve the lives of chickens raised for meat.

Without organisations, and the public, demanding that companies prioritise the welfare of the animals in their care, a chicken could spend her short life living in filthy conditions, often unable to walk due to the weight of her own body.

While more than 140 companies across the UK and Europe have already signed up to the BCC, The Humane League UK is encouraging others such as Subway and McDonald’s to follow suit. But, with chicken-focused fast food companies like Nando’s and KFC joining the BCC, the longer competitors wait, the weaker their excuses sound.
