Next time you're making a sandwich, spread a little love and try plant-based.

The sandwich is said to have been invented in the 18th century by John Montagu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich, so he wouldn’t have to stop his favourite pastime of gambling to eat his meals. Not only are sandwiches convenient, they are also hugely versatile and perfect any time of day, as well as for every dietary requirement. Today, I’m sharing my favourite plant-based sandwich fillings.
If you are anything like me, bread is my downfall. I try to stay away from it, however it always seems to make its way into my kitchen. I’m not sure how it happens. I think there’s a ghost in my house who loves bread as much as I do?
Even if you have nothing else in the house, bread and spread will be there for you.
Even though most UK supermarkets now have an array of vegan sandwiches, if you are out for the day, the only option you may find is the familiar falafel and hummus wrap. So you may be tempted to make your own sandwich at home and pack yourself a lunchbox to avoid disappointment.
Here’s some of my favourites:
- Vegan bacon (my favourite brand is THIS isn’t bacon)
- Vegan chicken, salad and mayo (Quorn and Veganaise is my go-to!)
- Vegan cheese (there are loads of plant-based cheese options but Applewood is my favourite)
- Vegan sausage (Richmond plant-based are a fantastic meat replacement)
- Chocolate spread (Vego is so good!)
- Crisp sandwich (most crisps are vegan with only some containing actual cheese)
- Chip butty
- Peanut butter and Marmite
- Vegan fish fingers (Quorn do a great replacement with no fish being harmed in the process)
- Vegan ham and mayo (again, Quorn and Veganaise are my go-to option here)
Try to opt for whole wheat and grains in your bread (oats, rye, rice, couscous, quinoa, etc) which are beneficial to your health.
You may have noticed that my list includes quite a few meat and dairy cheese alternatives. This is because I ate animal products for 25 years before switching to a vegan lifestyle. So I grew up eating these sandwiches.
Sandwiches are so versatile, and my favourite filling may be your idea of sandwich hell. If you’re new to plant-based, have fun, play around with different veggies or meat alternatives and find your fave filling! It is incredible that there are now so many options for people trying to eat less animal products. So, if you haven’t tried any of the above, why not give them a go for yourself?
