Quick (and fun) to make, pancakes are a great plant-based treat at any time of the year.

From the traditional lemon and sugar, to banana and chocolate spread, there are loads of yummy options for pancake toppings. And, whether you’re celebrating Shrove Tuesday or looking for a quick plant-based treat, we at The Humane League UK want to inspire you.

If you were to go back even a few years, the thought of a vegan pancake may have raised a few eyebrows. But it’s so simple to whip up a vegan friendly batter (see our recipe to find out how). Not only that, but we are inundated with choices for delicious toppings!

My top 3 recommendations for vegan pancake toppings are:

  1. Lotus Biscoff spread (I love it on toast) makes a sweet addition to a pancake.
  2. Whipped cream from Food Heaven (available in most UK supermarkets).
  3. Chocolate hazelnut spread from VEGO (the vegan alternative to Nutella).

These products show you eating plant-based does not mean missing out. Vegans can now have whipped cream...who’d have thought it?!

The classics are, of course, just as delicious. Golden syrup is vegan, as is maple syrup and agave nectar, so you and your sweet tooth can be satisfied.

For those that prefer a healthier option, fruit works really well with pancakes. For me, banana is a must on pancakes, along with a handful of berries. It’s great to get a couple of portions of fruit involved, even if only to feel less guilty for all the chocolate and vegan cream!

And how do I have my pancakes? This is what’s on my shopping list each Shrove Tuesday:

  • Lotus Biscoff spread
  • Chopped banana
  • A handful of blueberries
  • A sprinkle of walnuts (which are high in omega 3 fatty acids)

I hope this has inspired you to continue or to start leaving animals off your plate. Whatever topping you choose, be adventurous, make it fun and treat yourself!
